I spoke with a friend of mine who is an atheist the other day and we started to talk about religion a bit. He said some things that gave me something to think about. When I asked why he doesn’t believe, he had a few points. For one, there are a ton of religions. How could I know that mine was the right one? He also pointed out that people’s religious views generally coincide with where they live and how they were brought up. For instance Chinese follow Buddhism, Indians Hinduism, Arabs Islam, etc… and this points to the conclusion that people don’t actually choose a religion based on any type of analysis, they just choose what everyone else around them is doing. I thought that was interesting to think about.
Another thing he brought up is the idea that everyone who doesn’t accept Jesus as their savior is therefore going to hell. He asked me what I thought about the fact that the other 3-4 billion people in the world that don’t follow Christianity are going to hell, and I didn’t really have a good answer for him.
